Geboren am 20. März 1770 in Lauffen am Neckar, studierte er Theologie im Tübinger Stift gemeinsam mit Hegel und Schelling, wandte sich aber ganz der Dichtung und der antiken griechischen Götterwelt zu. Sein Leben zerbrach an radikalen Idealen, Liebeskummer und einer psychischen Erkrankung, die ihn ab 1806 bis zu seinem Tod 1843 im Haus des Tischlers Ernst Zimmer in Tübingen (heute der berühmte Hölderlinturm) gefangen hielt. [1, 2, 3] 

Hier begegnete er der intelligenten, kultivierten, kunstsinnigen und literarisch interessierten Ehefrau Susette (1769–1802), deren Schönheit zudem berühmt war.[26] Rasch empfand er eine große Zuneigung zu dieser Hausherrin und sie wurde seine große Liebe.

Der junge Friedrich Hölderlin hat nur einen Wunsch: Schriftsteller zu werden. Doch seine pietistische Mutter will, dass er Pfarrer wird. 1788 schickt sie den 18-Jährigen zum Studium nach Tübingen. Er wohnt als Stipendiat im Evangelischen Stift.

Der Candidat der Theologie Friedrich Hölderlin wollte kein Pfarrer werden, obwohl er durch den Aufenthalt im Tübinger Stift faktisch dazu verpflichtet war. Deswegen nahm er eine Stelle als Hauslehrer bei der Frankfurter Familie Gontard an. Sehr rasch bahnten sich Beziehungen zwischen dem jungen Mann und der jungen Hausfrau an. 

Friedrich Hölderlin ging im Winter 1801/02 zu Fuß von Deutschland nach Frankreich. Die wichtigsten Fakten dazu sind die Strecke von rund 1.500 Kilometern, der Start am 6. Dezember 1801 in Nürtingen und die Ankunft am 28. Januar 1802 in Bordeaux.

Die Winterwanderung dauerte etwa siebeneinhalb Wochen.
